Reading Paper Part 5 (Exercise A)

Using an office chair

Read this leaflet giving advice on using an office chair.
In most of the lines 1-5 there is one extra word which does not fit. One or two lines, however, are correct.
First decide whether a line is correct and write Y or N ('yes' or 'no') in the box provided.
If there is an extra word in the line, write that word in the second space.

  Correct? Extra word
Before starting to use your new Sit-Right office chair, Y
please take a few of moments to adjust it to the Hint
optimum position for comfort and health. Set the Hint
height of the seat so your knees which are at an Hint
angle of 90°, and position down the backrest where Hint
does it gives you most support. The armrests can be Hint
detached if not required. Y

TIPS - Extra word editing:
  • Read the whole text before you begin so you understand the meaning.
  • Read the whole sentence (not just the line) to make sure the grammar is correct.
  • Only take out words that are wrong, not just unnecessary.
  • Wrong words will often be prepositions (e.g. 'for'), pronouns (e.g. 'him') and articles (e.g. 'the'). Review use of articles in the New International Business English Workbook in Exercise 11.8.
