A Building Supporting Skills section helps students plan their course of study and strengthen the supporting skills that they will need to succeed. It provides help in note taking, paraphrasing and summarizing, increasing students’ vocabulary, improving their pronunciation, reviewing grammar, and developing learner strategies such as setting goals and organizing a study schedule.

It also includes:

Learner strategies that help students choose a test-preparation approach that fits their personal learning style
Assessment charts to help students analyze their strengths and weaknesses
A Grammar Structures Checklist that directs students to appropriate exercises in the book to strengthen problem areas
A complete grammar review that will help on all four sections of the new TOEFL iBT

Each of the four main categories of the new TOEFL iBT is presented in its own section of the book. Fully integrated Reading, Listening, and Speaking tasks prepare students for the new integrated tasks on the test. Four end-of-section tests for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing simulate a complete timed test.

The Reading section presents skill-building and test-taking strategies for the corresponding section of the new TOEFL iBT Test. An example box for every exercise illustrates how to complete each task. Throughout the Reading section, as well as the other skills sections, mini-tests check students’ progress in specific skill areas.
The six speaking tasks of this new portion of the TOEFL iBT are described in this section. Speaking exercises teach students how to plan their responses to TOEFL iBT Test speaking tasks, and step-by-step instructions help students respond effectively and within the time allowed. Checklists allow students to analyze their spoken responses and evaluate their own performance.
The Listening section prepares students for the features of natural speech samples they will hear on the TOEFL iBT. Mini-tests throughout the Listening section contain the types of questions and computer screens that students will see on the test. Exercises pinpoint specific skill sets such as identifying the topic and recognizing the speaker’s attitude.
Writing tasks are presented in the format that students will see on the new TOEFL iBT Test. The Writing section includes clear analyses of written responses to aid students in learning effective essay-writing techniques. Opportunities to evaluate student-written essays are given, as well as guidance in evaluating students’ own essays.

Four full-length Practice Tests, including a Diagnostic Test, at the beginning of the book simulate the TOEFL® iBT and provide opportunities for students to practice their skills in a timed, testlike environment. The answer keys to these Practice Tests direct students to exercises that will help them strengthen the areas that are causing them difficulties. The four Practice Tests in the book can also be taken on the CD-ROM, giving students the chance to focus on the unique skills involved in taking a test online.
