General FAQs
CD-ROM Technical FAQs

1) How many tests are included?
All seven practice tests are on the CD-ROM. Three of those practice tests and a diagnostic test are in the book.
2) Is the diagnostic test a practice test?
Yes, it's the first practice test. It is recommended that students take this test before they use the book to figure out what they need to focus on in their studies.
3) How is this book different from previous editions?
The test has changed radically. This TOEFL prep book prepares students for the iBT, and it has a speaking section as well as authentic speaking and writing samples that are scored according to the real test. The 4th Edition also has a much longer audio program, as the listening section of the test is now longer. Integrated skills tasks are new – these combine reading, listening, speaking and writing.
4) What are the four sections on the new internet based test?
Reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
5) What is the integrated skills approach?
The tasks involve combining skills, because that is what students have to do at a university. This provides a more accurate assessment of whether students will succeed in this academic environment.
6) Are there specific sections of the book that will guide me as a teacher?
The introduction in the frontmatter will guide teachers in using this book.
7) What's the Building Supporting Skills section about?
This section helps students practice skills that are not directly addressed on the Test but that are necessary to do well as a university student.
8) How do I get my students' answers when they take a test on the CD-ROM?
The CD-ROM program includes an option for your students to send their scores and their speaking and writing responses to you. Give your students your e-mail address. When they send you their scores and responses, you will be notified by e-mail. Follow the instructions in the e-mail message to create your own account on the Cambridge Prep Data Transfer site, where you can download your students' scores and responses.
9) What assessment tools are available for determining my students' TOEFL level?
The diagnostic test can be used to assess students' TOEFL level.
10) If I buy the CD-ROM, do I have to buy the book, too?
The CD-ROM comes free with purchase of the book; however, the CD-ROM is also available for purchase individually.
11) Is the Audio included on the CD-ROM?
The Audio for the practice tests is on the CD-ROM, but the Audio for the listening/speaking exercises are not. The Audio cassettes and CDs contain the material for the listening/speaking exercises.
12) What is the difference between the Practice Mode and Test Mode on the CD-ROM?
Practice Mode makes it easy for students to practice for the test and get feedback while they work. In Practice Mode, students can take any section of a test, and they can take a test timed or untimed and change their answers as many times as they want. In the Reading and Listening sections, they can check their answers right away and find out why an answer is incorrect. In addition, students can read the script of any listening material.

In contrast, Test Mode simulates the real test, without any of the flexibility and study aids available in Practice Mode, so that the students can get used to the experience of completing an actual test.

2) Does the CD-ROM work on networks?
No.
3) Do I need Internet access to run the CD-ROM?
Taking the tests on the CD-ROM does not require an Internet connection. However, to send your scores and responses electronically to your teacher and to access Cambridge Dictionaries Online, you will need an Internet connection.

Due to security concerns, many computers and networks have firewalls and other devices that may restrict this application's Internet access. If you experience such issues, you may have to adjust your security settings, including adding the application name, "Cambridge TOEFL(R) Prep.exe" on Windows or "Cambridge TOEFL(R) Prep" on Macintosh computers, to your list of trusted applications.
4) I cannot see text in the drop-down menu on the log-in screen. What should I do?
Changes introduced by Windows Vista may make text in drop-down menu difficult to read. If you have Version 1.0 of the CD-ROM running on Vista, you can switch the operating system to Classic Menus.
5) When I put in the CD-ROM, I get an error message that reads something like this:

AppName: cambri~1.exe AppVer: 10.1.0.11 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2945 Offset: 000fe50a

What can I do?
This problem happens on older CD-ROM drives.

1. Try the disc in another computer to make sure it's not damaged or corrupt.
2. Clean the disc. Clean the drive with a CD-ROM drive cleaner.
6) The Reading passages are not displayed correctly. What can I do?
Please make sure that you have the Arial font installed on your machine.
7) Does the CD-ROM have any compatibility issues with software drivers?
In general, please make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card. Specifically, if you have Windows 2000 Nvidia drivers, including Nvidia RIVA TNT2, Model 64 and Model 64PRO, note that certain features of versions 5 and 6, which launch rundll32.exe and remain running in the background, have been shown to interfere with the performance of this CD-ROM. To resolve this compatibility issue, install the most recent versions of all of these drivers. You may also have to disable the Nvidia tray icon.
