Inside the text

What and why?

From CEWw 3 onwards, most of the READING texts in the Topic and Language Units are accompanied by brief tasks which require the students to have a 'global understanding'. For example, a task might ask them to explain in their own words what some key terms from the text mean. The purpose in keeping these tasks brief is to maintain interest and motivation, without making students work out the detail of every text they read. However, it is often important and useful to focus on the vocabulary, grammar and form of a text, so for this reason optional Inside the text tasks are provided in the first Topic and Language Unit in each Theme. Inside the text tasks are also provided in the Out and about sections.

Practical ideas

  • If your class has students of MIXED ABILITIES, you can divide the students into different groups. Some students can get extra practice by working through the Inside the text tasks, while other students work on freer tasks. (See Mixed abilities suggestions in the Unit notes in the Teacher's Book.)
  • Students can also make up Inside the text tasks for each other, using the ones in the book as examples. Encourage them to look at Inside the text exercises in other Topic and Language Units for ideas.
  • The Help yourself list at the back of the Student's Book also gives more ideas for Inside the text exercises that you or your students can devise. You can put these exercises in a class EXERCISE BOX.
