When writing Messages, our aim was to provide students with a map that would both engage their interest and guide them well in their English learning journey – so that they can see where they are going and how to get there, with landmarks on the way to help them measure their progress.

We know that teaching and learning a foreign language in a secondary school context can sometimes feel like an uphill task. So we feel it is important to focus very specifically on the purpose of each lesson – it should not be seen as simply learning a bit more grammar and vocabulary for its own sake.

In Messages, each "step" has an aim and a clear and practical outcome, so that students can regularly experience a sense of success. Throughout the course, they are encouraged to use the language they've learnt in realistic, communicative tasks. This approach is echoed in the way that each book has its own overall theme, reflected in the portfolio of work which students create at each level.

Finally, we know how hard it can be to keep learners both motivated and interested as they journey through English. To help you do this, we have paid particular attention to the richness of the course, providing you with a stimulating array of materials in the coursebook and in the extras like the Infoquests, materials which develop in complexity and maturity along with the students.

We hope Messages will help to make your work as a teacher as efficient and stress-free as possible, and that it helps your students to be positive and resourceful language learners with a real sense of achievement.

Enjoy the journey.
