Oral Testing

Oral testing is an important new feature of Interchange Third Edition. With its emphasis on flexible teacher support, the Teacher's Edition includes new oral quizzes at the back of the book as well as detailed guidelines on when and how to give a quiz, a scoring sheet, and a question bank. One of the most challenging tasks for a teacher, however, is testing learners' oral ability. As Arthur Hughes suggests, we should work to create a testing system that improves teaching while being valid, reliable, and economical in terms of time and money.

In the article "Testing Oral Ability" Hughes offers teachers ten practical tips for oral testing. These tips appear on pages 124 to 126 of Testing for Language Teachers, second edition, published by Cambridge University Press in 2002.
