Teaching Large Multilevel Classes

There are very different notions of what constitutes a "large" class. Large classes can range from 30 to 100 students or more. Regardless of the actual number of students in a class, many teachers struggle daily with what seems to them to be a "large" class. Added to the problem of sheer size, all classes – with the exception of one-to-one classes – are multilevel, which can create even more challenges for the teacher.

The article "Eleven Principles of Coping in Large Multilevel Classes" provides many practical tips for teachers of large, multilevel classes. This article appears on pages 7 to 15 of Teaching Large Multilevel Classes, by Natalie Hess, published by Cambridge University Press in 2001.
