Darwin

Our largest room offers the ideal environment for a variety of meetings and events. Just off The Pitt Building’s impressive reception area, the Darwin Room's generous proportions and built-in A/V equipment make it our most popular space.

Charles Darwin was born in Shropshire in 1809. He began his studies at Christ's College Cambridge originally intending to become a clergyman but he soon nurtured an interest in botany and geology and joined Robert Fitzroy, the captain of HMS Beagle on an expedition to chart the coastline of South America. For over 5 years Darwin collected and noted a huge variety of geological features, fossils and living organisms and began a lifetime's work on his theory of natural selection, culminating with his books The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man.

Darwin died in 1882 and is buried close to Sir Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey.
