  1. Go through the Tutorial in the book or on the CD-ROM.

Download Tutorial pages in PDF* format (size: 218 KB).

  2. Complete the computer-based Test 1 on the CD-ROM or the paper-based Diagnostic Test in the book. This will highlight areas that you need to concentrate on the most.

    • Answer feedback on the CD-ROM will direct you to relevant skill-building exercises in the book.

    • If you take the paper-based Diagnostic Test in the book, the Answer Key will direct you to appropriate exercises.

  3. Read the strategies at the beginning of the Listening, Structure, Reading, and Writing Sections in the book.

  4. Work through the exercises in the book that concentrate on the skills you need to develop. Take the mini-tests as you proceed through a section to check your progress.

  5. Take the test at the end of that section in the book or take the appropriate section test on CD-ROM Test 2.

  6. Take the Practice Tests in the book or on the CD-ROM. Tests 5, 6, and 7 on the CD-ROM are not in the book. You may want to leave one to take as a final check before taking the actual TOEFL® Test.

  7. Answer feedback to the Practice Tests in the book or on the CD-ROM will direct you to skill-building exercises in the book.
Timing

On the CD-ROM, you have the option of moving through the questions at your own pace. In order to complete all of the questions in a timed test, you should try to pace yourself by paying attention to the number of questions and time remaining.

On the cassettes or audio CDs, all Listening tests and mini-tests give you the same amount of time (12 seconds) to answer the questions as on the Paper-Based TOEFL® Test. In the skill-building exercises, pause the cassette or audio CD after each question if you need more time to answer or if the question requires a written answer.
