The Writing Section of the Computer-Based TOEFL® Test measures your ability to compose an essay in standard written English. You will have thirty minutes to write an essay in response to an assigned question.

Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL® Test offers almost 30 exercises to guide you through the writing process, from writing topic sentences to brainstorming for ideas to writing conclusions. An excerpt from one of these exercises can be downloaded below.

When you take the actual TOEFL® Test, you may write your essay out by hand, use a typewriter, or use a computer. If you decide to use the computer, you must use the word-processing application that is provided at the testing center.

An animated tutorial on the CD-ROM explains the features of the word-processing system you will be using on the day of the test.

You can practice cutting, pasting, deleting, and undoing your work. In addition, the CD-ROM allows you to save or print your essay so that you can ask an experienced English-language writing teacher for an opinion of your essay.
